It’s been a week since the release of Portrayal of Guilt’s debut full-length album ‘Let Pain Be Your Guide’ and the record still doesn’t feel ‘solved’.
Much like the previous releases the tracks sound like they were written by hopelessness itself on death row counting down the days. The sombre lyrics and poignant riffs work in perfect tandem to create something chilling and epic in its own way. Let Pain Be Your Guide doesn’t give up any of Portrayal of Guilt’s trademark aggression either, it just manages to do more musically and lyrically than PoG’s previous releases. Granted this may be in part due to the length of the release by comparison but the disjointed nature of the tracks keeps you interested for the duration of the release and so far for the duration of well… every listen thereafter. This record is one that you will keep coming back to not because of any catchy hooks or memorable riffs, that’s not what Portrayal are about, but because you’re intrigued. There’s no structure to this record, no familiarity and no simplicity. Yet this complex mixture of chaos and misery works. Works damn well.
