A strategy against capitalist realism

Behold! Real(s), a counter-cultural phenomenon in the making. I asked singer and guitarist Dan Fatel, about the band’s political manifesto.

Dan: The ‘Real’ is what any ‘reality’ must suppress; indeed reality constitutes itself through just this repression. The Real is an unpresentable X, a traumatic void that can only be glimpsed in the fractures and inconsistencies in the field of apparent reality. So one strategy against capitalist realism could involve invoking the Real(s), underlying the reality that capitalism presents to us. Our strategy for the year is to promote the book ‘Capitalist Realism’ by Mark Fisher. This is the key to understanding where the human race stands at this moment in time.

Tell me more about this debut single and video.

Dan: ‘Stop Freaking Out’ is a love song to humanity in late-stage capitalism. The eternal hustle! We’ll be making more propaganda videos for our YouTube channel, one a week for a year. It’s gonna be a stream of our reality in these dark times of 2019. Our album (titled D.S.L.B) will be released when the cosmic winds are right.

I am intrigued about your political activism.

Dan: We support Extinction Rebellion. This form of political activism is a direct challenge to Capitalist Realism. The collapse of the environment and increasing planetary extinction rates for all species is one of the issues that highlights the hypocrisy of capitalism; endless consumer consumption, yet the resources of the planet are finite and the tipping point to save the planet as we know it is fast approaching.
