Who is controlling you?

At first, ‘Mind Contol’ sounds like a mantra from a dystopian future, or present, if you let Kellalit’s occult performance take hold of your anxieties.

This is when you realise that ‘Mind Control’ is not just theatre, and there is something very personal in the song. And as soon as you become aware of it, you wonder who was controlling her. And this is when it gets darker.

Kellalit felt so lost in a male-dominated environment, forcing her to look and behave as expected that she had to summon the darkest and part of herself and fight back. And although she makes light of it, we know it takes a considerable amount of mental strength to regain control of who you are.

So who was controlling her? Patriarchy in the entertainment business? Kellalit chants, ‘He cannot control me’. Maybe it is symbolic for all men, or perhaps someone, in particular, made her realise it was time to stop being controlled.
