Birthday Girl latest song is about the feeling of “wanting to devour someone to the point of cannibalism completely”. That’s quite extreme. Is it a metaphor to the loss of our physical world to all that is digital or are you just very hungry?
Birthday Girl: It’s not metaphorical, I suppose you hear people talk about cute animals and things with phrases like ‘oh it’s so cute I could gobble it up’, so like that but with consenting adult humans. There was the story of that German guy that advertised online that he wanted to be eaten, so he and another guy got together and tucked straight into his tackle, sharing his shaft. Not sure if it was true, but I wouldn’t go that far put it that way.
The video is also reminiscent of a ceremony; the body lost in a tantric dance. Are you aware of all these primitive connotations of the track or was it just automatic?
Birthday Girl: Yeah, we definitely wanted to show someone lost in a trance, the song is about submitting to your basic animalistic desires and losing your cool in the process, cause he’s not really dancing, it’s more a flailing frantically to either find something or get rid of something, but essentially looking a bit silly. So cool that you see it in a similar way.
Is it wrong to say that you are reconnecting with early seventies experimental music and dance, and if so, why do you feel the need to go back to that period?
Birthday Girl: We love early seventies experimental music but maybe not directly influenced by the sound, more the free nature of it. I’m into the idea of expressing yourself beyond the point of looking or sounding good; there was no vanity in the art back then, which I like. I wish I could say there’s no vanity in Birthday Girl; we’re working on our authenticity while looking fucking fantastic.
