The allure of certain genres often captivates musicians, inspiring them to examine the intricacies of sound production and instrumentation to recreate or evolve those iconic sonic landscapes. By meticulously studying the timbres and techniques employed by their predecessors, they seek to capture the essence of what makes those sounds so compelling.
Peinilla is an artistic project based in Colombia that combines many styles of music, including new wave and synth punk. Heavily inspired by the traditional elements of Afro-Colombian music, Peinilla channels these practices through electronic sounds. Yet, as global diversity shapes the evolution of music, the creative processes behind this project are always diverse, often tapping into wider genres.
“I believe that we live in a world where the majority are open to different types of dialogues that are enriched by the contribution of different peoples”, says Peinilla. “There are countries that have their identity thanks to migrants, which means there is a range of sounds and flavours that nourish the music. In my case, I have always been fascinated with the music of the East – Gypsy and Arabesque melodies, so I try to incorporate these sounds in my compositions. This, combined with basic patterns from Afro-Colombian rhythms, gives my musical style a characteristic linked to the place where I’m from, to the roots mixed with dark sound elements.”
This fascination and desire for experimentation drive innovation and cross-pollination across musical boundaries, leading to the emergence of hybrid sounds and fresh interpretations that pay homage to the past while forging new sonic frontiers.
Uriel Bromberg, an American singer-songwriter and game developer, has found that adapting his musical sound has made it easier to stay relevant while simultaneously preserving certain traditional elements of his artistic identity. “As genres shift and redefine themselves, I want people to listen to me and think, “There he is,” no matter what music genre I’m playing.”
The emotive music he creates transcends genre boundaries, and although he is influenced by a myriad of styles, the authenticity of emotion defies all. “Regardless of how trends come and go, I believe that genuine emotion is timeless and resonates deeply with listeners. Sometimes, I try to listen to my old songs so I can use those references.” In his case, emotion through music serves as the universal thread, transcending genres and connecting listeners through shared experiences.
Collaborations with other artists and cross-genre projects influenced by certain legends have long been a catalyst for the evolution of musical genres, serving as dynamic breeding grounds for ingenuity. For Lola Mey, an indie pop singer-songwriter from the Netherlands, it was the artist Eefje de Visser who inspired her to branch out and make an experimental album. Despite often operating within one sonic realm, Lola found herself motivated to elevate her art form further.
Lola explains, “I fell in love with her music, which was so new and fresh to me. She sings in Dutch; I had never heard such amazingly produced Dutch songs. So, I decided to also make music in Dutch, songs that have a different structure and sounds that I had never incorporated into my work before. By doing this project, I learned a lot of new techniques, and I challenged myself creatively to develop songs and productions that felt unique. I saw that project as a period of growth, which I still benefit from.”
